The Cambridge Home Guard Roll Index

Compiled by Dave Homewood

The following list of names is a roll compiled from various sources of the men who served in the Cambridge Home Guard. The major source of names has been various editions of the wartime Waikato Independent newspaper, which would often gazette the initials and surname of those men joining the Home Guard in the early days. Other names have been found in various other sources such as articles in the same newspaper that mention individuals who have not been gazetted, and other such documents. A few have also been added that were never mentioned in the newspaper, but have either identified themselves as past Home Guard members, or they have been identified by family members as having been in the Home Guard.

Because the newspapers would only ever write the initials and surname of an individual person, and never write their first names, these have had to be filled in by researching various resources in order to make the list more complete. The reason why I chose to do this additional research is to avoid confusion between individuals with the same surname, and also for posterity. It's nice to have a more complete record.

This however has proven to be a difficult task in some circumstances and impossible in others. One problem is that the newspaper typesetters were prone sometimes to spelling mistakes and other errors, so even the original source material may in some few cases be incorrect. If any doubt has crept in over identifying an individual they initials have been left as printed in the newspaper, with a suggested actual full name mentioned in the notes section.

Sources that have assisted greatly in identifying both the full names and the occupation and address locality of those men have included the New Zealand Electoral Rolls for 1938, 1941 and 1943 (with the major emphasis on the 1941 and 1943 editions as they're more pertinent to the period the Cambridge Home Guard existed). Also used in a much smaller capacity to attempt to fill some of the gaps was the 1946 Electoral Roll, which has provided details on a further 44 men. This is a little less reliable as far as the occupation goes of course because some men who returned from the war are still listed as soldiers. As well as this, Maori were not listed in the Electoral Roll I had access too as they were on the Maori Roll. And some younger Home Guard memebrs would hvae been under 20 and inelligable to be on the roll too.

Another source used to assist this list were the Cambridge telephone books for 1938, 1941 and 1944. And the Wises Directory for those years in the early 1940's were also very valuable.

Many gaps are still present. I'm certain some men have been missed all together. So if any reader can fill in the gaps it would be very much appreciated if you would contact the author please. To view the list, roll down the page or use the alphabet below to jump down.
